That green flash across the sky on Sunday evening...

By sheer freakish luck, I happened to have seen it. For a while, my heart sank as my ears braced for an explosion. Fortunately, by now, we can safely conclude that it wasnt an aircrash. Whatever it was, it travelled quite slowly, slow enough for my wife to catch a glimpse in the anticipated direction of travel when the object re-emerged after being blocked by some flats. It definitely travelled slower than a meteor. The best way I can describe it is that, it looked like an unusually large ball of fireworks stuff, constantly disintegrating as it moves southwards. No photograph though. Just chipping in my 2 cents worth, desperately hoping to hear the truth about this "UFO".

Update: After reading this account by squareCircleZ, I like to reaffirm that I was in the Bedok Central area, and the object appeared on the east side of where I was heading south. There are some accounts suggesting an alternative direction of travel, which I firmly believe, is wrong. The time was around 7.40pm, as widely reported, just a minute or two in the twilight before the sky turned totally dark. The object was obscured by clouds from time to time, and illuminated the clouds as it streaked past, suggesting that it is pretty higher up than typical fireworks altitude. Given the height, it was pretty fast, but since there was no sonic boom, it cannot be supersonic. Either that, or it was really far away, which could mean that it was a very very large object.

  3. Freaky, on the 8th January 2008, in Nottinghamshire (England) about 8.45 at night me and friends all over the county witnessed the sky light up bright green for about 5seconds and then again for about 2 seconds. Scared everyone as the power grid went down twice, but there has been no reports of any electrical damage to any sub stations or transformers. There was just silence and no noise what so ever. Just keen to find out where you witnessed it as your account seems very similar.

  4. I'm glad someone else has seen this as I thought I was going mad. Whilst driving home from work tonight ( 9th Jan 08) at around 5.50pm I saw the whole sky flash green suddenly...with no noise also. The street lamps cut out and then flickered back on. Really strange. This was on the A31 west bound in Dorset.

  5. i dont know if any of you guys will read this but its now 6/5/08.
i live in chepstow (south wales , uk) and about 10pm walking through a feild me and 3 friends notices white lights moving in the sky, getting brighter then dimmer and changing direction eraticly then all of a sudden there was a huge green flash like a shooting star which lit up the entire feild. then about 20 seconds after that there was a big white glow on the horison that lasted about 10 seconds directly where the green flash was heading.
any ideas what any of this could be?

  6. im in Perth, Australia and have seen the same green sky phenomena here too, whilst driving home a green glowing orb with a massive trail of green spectral entrails passed high in the sky and dissapeared over the Hills close to where i live.

Im at a loss to explain what it was i saw.

  7. lol, what a funny thing, me and my friend also saw green flashes in the sky, it flash three times with like 3-4 seconds between, and on the third flash in the sky while it was rainning and cloudy and saw a green circle in the sky from where the flash came from, very odd

  8. yeah pretty strange in a way but i've been seeing these green flashes for years now. the first time i saw it was in october 2002 around 9pm i was driving down the highway in Atlanta,Georgia when suddenly overfhead was some huge object flying fast, I couldn't tell what it was but it went behind the clouds and there was a big explosion... like a big boom then the sky and the clouds turned green.. whats even more strange is that the news or the media didnt even talk about it. I think i may know what these things are now!

  9. man, im glad that im not going crazy haha. my story is closest to vot's.

as i was driving home from work at around 11ish at night, i saw the sky light up green, then 5 seconds later, green again. then the sky lit up green then immediately a nice shade of red, like a magenta, then around 5 seconds, back to green again. its now almost 4 am, and about a half hour ago, the sky was dancing. only this time there was a loud humming noise as the sky lit up green, blue and magenta. it stayed lit for about 10 seconds, then stopped.

    what do you think people?

  10. i saw it last night about 12:55 am in london kentucky, it flashed about three times and also looked like an odd giant firework.
i just happened to be outside smoking when it happened, it was quite terrifying at first.

  14. I saw one last night in Downpatrick, N.Ireland. A bright green flash (the whole sky lit up) and the power flicked off over the whole town. There was a weird silence as it happened!!!! I've assumed its some kind of electrical surge.

  15. This is weird that all of you claimed to have seen something similar to what my fiance and I saw last night. We live outside of Philadelphia and there was an ice/rain storm. There was a green flash in the sky 4 times-I would say 10-20 seconds apart. The lights flickered, and we looked up and could see the green flashes out our window. We thought it was a transformer but nothing was ever reported, and quite frankly, it seemed to high in the sky to be a transformer.

  16. So reading all of your comments, it's pretty evident that we've all seen the same thing over a period of time. I'm in my NY home and about 20 mins ago, looking through my bedroom window, I've seen the green/bluish light flicker in the sky for a few seconds just like lightning lights up the sky in the summer. Well, it's the middle of winter and I had to get on the computer to research this topic. Glad to have come across this. So weird.

  18. Just a moment ago myself I saw this same thing the whole sky turned a bright lime green color for several seconds then faded. I had seen this previously during a severe storm my father had recorded. This time there was no loss of power but we have been racked by severe weather all day, snow ice and rain.

We didnt notice any street lights going out but it did cloak the entire sky. We are in northamptonshire uk.

There was no sound, no storms etc. It's the first time I have seen this and was surprised to see so many people reporting the same thing.

  27. had exactly the same thing... the power went off all over the house and then a massive bright green light lit up all the windows in the house from outside. this was at 3am on the dot.. then at 4am, an hour later.. a massive white flash of light. has anyone got a satisfactory explination for this seemingly common occurance???

there was no sound, but shortly after, there was a flock of birds all in hysterics making a lot of noise as they flew away..
something happened.. just dont know what. would like to know.

  28. What you saw was either thunder-snow or an electrical arc as a fusible link in the power grid blew. The both are most frequent during thunder-snow events.

The morning and evening green flash (or sometimes called emerald flash) occurs in a super clean atmosphere (tropical islands in the Pacific are where that is most frequently observed) and is less frequently seen. I have never seen this at land stations.

If you have ever seen the sunrise/sunset green flash, you would not mistake it for the thunder-snow green flash. They are different.

hope this helps it scared me the first time as well

It's good to know that such flashes occur rather frequently all around the world, even if there is no explanation why.

  31. I saw them too!! Last night, at about 230-3am. It was windy and all the sudden the power went out. Not 2 seconds after that, there was this bright green light, but it was two lines that closed in on each other, then flashed bright. Like when you turn the tv off, you know? Only green.

It happened twice, then the transformer outside the house let out a loud POP and everything was quite. The transformer didn't blow or anything, just let out a POP.

Still don't know what it was, but I refused to believe that it was a UFO or whatever.

I'm sure there was a rational explaination, I just don't know what it is.

  34. I have the explaination for the Lime Green Streak in the sky which has materialized in different parts of the world and seen by many. It is a high holy spiritual color Comet Ship from another dimension that cannot be seen unless it materializes for only a few seconds to make Earth aware of it landing this year 2009 or 2010 just north of Los Angeles to bring important messages to the world. I have been aware of this since 1985.

  35. I live in Denver Co and just saw a very large brilliant green ball of light with a bright white and yellow center and a sparkling trail of dancing light fall from the sky. I was looking west towards the Rocky Mountains. It fell very quickly at a slight angle from left to right, but almost straight towards the ground. It looked almost like a comet or shooting star but much, much larger and fell straight down. There was no sound, I kept waiting for a loud crash or boom, but just silence. It looked like it was going to impact within miles from me. This was nothing electrical or a sunset flare it is 12midnight. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen in my life and it made me sick to my stomach when I saw it.

  36. I live in Auburn, Washington. Just before I was about to leave my aunts house I saw a flash in the sky, so I looked over thinking that it was lightning. Just after that the whole section of sky that I was looking at flashed a very vibrant green color, then again with a vibrant pink color, then again blue. There was no noise whatsoever and it was pretty cloudy as it has been raining. My aunt, my mom, and my little 5 year old brother all saw it.

  41. I am in Huntington, NY. Northern Long Island to be exact. There is a rainstorm blazing outside. And I happened to be out smoking. When I turned my back to come back inside I saw out of my periphery the sky light into an emerald, lime green. I turned around and about 5 seconds later it happened again. The entire sky. It didn't affect the electricity here at all. But my gosh, what a powerful moment. Why is there nothing reported on these flashes?

  42. I just had the same exact thing happen as Anonymous described above in the 12/3/09 post. I was driving on I90 near Natick, MA heading in to Boston for the evening, around 8:45pm.

The first real snowstorm of the winter was in effect so there was considerable cloud cover.

My girlfriend and I both saw the entire sky turn a bright lime green twice with a few second delay between event. It was bright enough that it lit up the sky to a level of early dusk or late dawn.

We both thought it was quite strange and I started searching this morning for anything related to this event and found this page!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Now that I think about it this was well after sunset, which was around 4:15; The event occurred on 12/5/09 at 8:15pm EST. I think this eliminates the possibility of a sunset green-flash event.

Also, when we saw the first flash I was looking around to find the source of the light but upon seeing the second flash it appeared that the sky was lit pretty evenly which suggests to me that it occurred higher up in the atmosphere.

  44. Might as well add my story. Today I seen what I think we all are seeing for the most part.
This bright green flash in the night sky. I even noticed almost a focal point where it was more white. I swear I should of heard a huge boom. I live close to a nuclure plant and thought it was that! The rest of the way home I kept watching the sky and didn't see anything again.
What ever it is i think it's connect to the weather.

It happened again not 2 seconds later and it looked like two green camera flashes covering a decent portion of night sky. the light was evenly distributed so it had to of been from above the clouds. It was wierd...energy explosion, weather balloon, ufo, ?????

  48. Not sure if this is still active, but i have been googling Green Flashes & get nothing other that this posts relating to the sunset. This morning at approx 1:30am, we went outside at work & saw 3 bright green flashes (which vaguley looked like they had hints of yellow & red) light up the whole sky above a mountain, approximately 25-30 seconds in between each flash. No loud noise, no disturbances...just the flashes & then nothing! I have been looking arround, but no clue what this is!!!

  50. Tonight was my turn. Driving 70 mph going east, a circle of green light flashed for a few seconds off to the north. I've driven this road all of my life. Over in that area is a WalMart Distribution Center, and a prison - both with lots of power lines and high voltage lights, surrounded by woods. The green flash was just above the buildings. This happened at about 9:40 pm in upstate New York. I've seen a few other strange things in the sky, but not like this.

  52. I saw this last night in West Des Moines, Iowa. I was out for a ride on my bike when the whole western sky lit up with a green/blueish hue for only a couple of seconds. It was silent and very eerie. There were no weather conditions other than it being unseasonably warm in Iowa. Very little cloud cover. When I arrive home about 3 miles away, my neighbor reported seeing the same thing as did his wife. My neighbor said that car alarms were going off. I then went home and my wife reported briefly losing power at our home, though she did not see the flash.

Saw something like this earlier this evening around 8pm. Moving in a Westerly direction at fairly high alititude but falling to earth, very bright green ball, meteor like, diappeared below our horizon, and a few seconds later left a white smoky trail amongst the clouds. Followed by a funny kind of impact sound which seemed to be mid-range audible frequency, but quite intense.

The three of us who saw this felt it likely the Green Ball would have come to ground in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the North Kerry Coast...

  62. It's now December 23rd, 2010. On November 11th, 2009 a friend and I were traveling from Southern Pines, NC to North on U.S. Highway 1 and saw the sky suddenly flash green. We were probably 5-10 miles north of Southern Pines, NC when we saw it. We got kind of frightened thinking that maybe we were getting bombed by someone. We called our wives to make sure everything was ok at home and they said yes. I have never seen anything like that in my life. Not suggesting is was a UFO or anything, but it had to be something major to make the whole sky light up green.

I was just walking along, minding my own business and looking up at the stars. I then saw a bright flash in my peripheral vison, I looked up to the sky and saw what looked like a green fireball flying though the sky and burning up in the atmosphere. I then heard a large crack like that of thunder when lightening strikes close by and it gave a huge burst of green light and quickly disipated, like embers going out. This all happened in a couple of seconds.

  66. I know it has been some time since this topic has been brought to our attention/posted but I would like to say that I have witnessed this phenomenon on three occasions during this past week all during evening hours. ..In the past week I have witnessed "Emerald Flashes" on three separate occasions, last night being the most 'active'. Most of the flashes being bright enough to trick the streetlight sensors(being it turned off all the streetlights visible to me).
On the first night a little after midnight I had literally thought that someone had taken a photo through my window and quickly looked over to see yet another extremely bright flash of green light which appeared to be coming from the sky. I became extremely curious after awaiting some sort of sound following but there was nothing. There was no rain nor snow just slight overcast as I live in London Ontario, Canada and we are between seasons (winter and spring).
The second occurrence was much like the first, same weather but it was a little later in the evening for I do not recall the exact time but It was sometime after midnight.
Last night/This morning between 3:00am and 4:00am was much different. On the other two occasions the flashes had quickly appeared and disappeared yet last night there were many flashes all ranging in brightness. The flashes began before I climbed into bed around 3:30am there was an extremely bright green flash all on its own which triggered the streetlights to go off. As I said it was all on it is own, one single flash and no sound. By 3:45am there was many small flashes occurring all soundless yet not quite strong enough to turn the street lights off. At 4:00am it had seemed like a war was going on, I was shaken. The brightest flashes of light I had ever seen during any of these occurrences. ..YET this was in a set of three! (3) All at once seemingly taking less than one and a half seconds to occur and then that was it. Nothing more occurred. The last flash struck me as extremely odd last night seeming as I have been seeing these flashes for the past few nights yet none as bright nor in a sequence of three.
This morning I woke up determined to solve this mystery and found myself bombarded with stories from Japan, Hawaii and all around the world being struck with natural disasters. I have read that Japan has been experiencing earthquakes these past few days with today's being the biggest of the bunch. Now I am wondering if maybe these flashes are maybe (call me crazy)some sort of natural warning signs?. ..I am curious if anyone else who has experienced these flashes remembers any naturally occurring disasters or something to that sort maybe prior or after seeing these flashes. ..?

  67. Had an occurence similar to the above this eveing at around 10pm in Essex, England. Overcast rainy night, sitting in bed with the wife when we saw a huge white flash, which we assumed was lightning, but then followed a couple of seconds later by a bright green flash. The green was such a vibrant colour, really deep but bright, almost like a green laser. These were bright enough to light the room. We both ran to the window, but saw nothing or heard anything (the window was open). Thought I would investigate on the internet and came across this page. I only wished I was outside at the time so I could have seen it properly - very odd indeed!!

I was certain something crazy just happened and it would be all over the internet and news but nothing...I am so curious now.. What are we all seeing???

  76. Im in Port Coquitlam BC and was outside smoking approx 12:50 am, September 29th 2012 and Just saw the whole sky lite up a green like ive seen in the aurora borealis but no streaks the whole sky. It happened 3 times and at the same time buzzing like a massive transformer. Way Louder than a hydro power station. Ive been near a transformer that blew on a electrical pole, nothing like what i saw tonight. I would've assumed it was aurora borealis but the buzzing was weird. H.A.R.P? I hope not.

  78. Last night at approximately 10:55 pm there was a loud almost metallic noise then the power went out in my neighborhood and then a bright green flash. It caught both my wife and I by surprise and my cousin who was visiting as well. Then about 30 seconds later it happened again. My cousin was already ready to leave prior to this and decided to make his way outside and I followed to see him off. This time when the loud noise occurred we were expecting it. This time the green flash came and THEN the power went out. It happened about 30 seconds later while we were still outside. The green color was about the color of plasma in the northern lights. I did not smell any ozone which one would expect with the proximity that it was to us.

We (wife and I) head back inside and go to our big glass sliding doors to look outside. When the loud noise happens again we instantly turn toward the direction from which the flash had been emanating. We both got an unobstructed view of the green flash which was huge. WAY to large to be lightning. Based on other objects near by I would say minimum of 100 ft across to maybe 200 ft. After this flash the power went out again and since we were by the window we could see that it was all of the houses around us and cell tower lights near by.

I have heared 2 transformers blow up before and I actually watched one of them and this was not at all similar.

  79. 26th Dec 2014 Midnight.

My partner and sister went to walk the dogs as heavy snow had started they didn't want to miss it. I stayed at home.

She said she saw 2 green flashes that lit up the whole sky. It was a cloudy night so it wasn't clear to see what it was.

Me being at home, there was no power cut or anything.

She even asked passers by if they saw something as it was unbelievable. They had all seen the green flashes earlier on.

Wish I had seen it now. Although I might have shit myself a little bit. What a weird one thing to happen, I couldn't find anything on the internet.

  80. i just saw it too this night. I'm in Indonesia at Central Java. There was a huge cloud about to make a thunderstorm and the wind was strong as i could hear its raging sound. I was at my balcony when i saw this greenlight flashed across the sky for about 1 second, no sound came from it. I thought something was going to explode as i put my hands on my ears and just right when the greenlight sparked across sky, the power grid went down. it happened like 30 minutes ago at 7:30 p.m. on November 4th 2016.

  82. Date: 1/21/2020 @ 3am... I just seen the green flash of light heading straight down at a good rate of speed... Waited for a possible mushroom cloud or a rumble... I live just north of Tulsa, Ok and it was in the northeast sky... Freaky scary stuff whatever it is -David M. Ingersoll Jr.
